Points to Consider:
Test and Quizzes - Not every test and quiz has to count for points. If it really is just formative assign the value 0 to the test or quiz. You do this by selecting the "0.00" under grading options. While the students will see zero impact on their grade they just might see substantial impact in their learning. To help parents and student understand this be sure to put practice or feedback only. You may even wish to put a formative column in the grade book indicating "0" percentage of the entire grade. Everyone should get the point!
Tune into Mastery - You really need to be assigning standards and learning objectives to the assignment or quiz. In this way students can see if they are on the road to mastery. You can actually link more then one target from several assessments or assignments.Students will get a wonderful view of their journey to mastery.
Self Test - Take that rubric or checklist and have students use it for self-assessment. Start by making a quiz with the rubric or checklist descriptors as separate questions (either multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank). When students answer ...the information is recorded for the teacher in the "results" tab. Please note: It is helpful to make all choices in multiple choice correct since these are just answers based on where the student feels he or she is. It is also wise to set all points to "0". One could either use completion grade or the described set up to keep score from being part of grade.
Use those Discussion - Create a discussion that you actually have as a class note book between you and the students. To keep it private ... build it as an assignment. On the other hand a real open discussion can really get information flowing between students... helping them learn along the way. You may even wish to put a rubric on the discussion in order to stress academics and content.
